idk how to explain to people outside latin america that during the cold war while everyone was praising the west for it’s freedom and progress compared to the horrors of the communist dictators in the east, thousands of latines where being murdered, tortured and silenced by capitalist dictatorships that were directly supported by the us and are the main reason why latin america is a “poor” region nowdays as they completely destroyed our economies. like, i know i’ve already talked about this before here but it’s so infuriating how everyone uses the “communism killed thousands of people/communism is a dictatorship” every fucking time while forgetting how almost every latin american country went through a capitalist dictatorship. like, it’s honestly amazing how those years of history are erased and ignored on porpuse by everyone because of first world capitalist propaganda that loves to paint capitalism as the only system that can secure freedom. that’s the reason many people condemn latin america of being “ruined by socialism”, because it is true many latin american countries remember the horrors of those dictatorships and are more socialist today thanks to it. but we weren’t ruined by socialism, it was capitalism (and colonialism) what made this to us and now everyone pretends it’s because we’re socialists.

“they call it the cold war because there wasnt any actual war happening. for them

If you’re the kind of person who would do that, you never become Bezos in the first place.

My Dad owned a business my whole life. It was profitable, but it didn’t expand. I ask him once why he never grew it, and he said it’s nearly impossible without climbing on someone’s back–your vendors, your customers, your employees. Particularly that last one. You don’t wait until your business is big to be a good human being. The very first time you have to choose between your own profit and your employees health insurance, you choose the later. You give maternity leave even though the government doesn’t make you. You dock your own salary to not lay people off during a recession. You have adequate staffing and reliable hours. Anybody who says you can’t run a retail business on a normal, reasonable, predictable schedule you know in advance is full of shit. My Dad did it for 35 years (always have one more person than you think you need, and 98% of your staffing problems vanish). It’s just not maximum profit. If you don’t prioritize extracting profit from every corner of your business, you never become rich enough to give billions away.

(One of the things my father is proud of is that by the time he retired they hadn’t needed to take a help wanted ad in 30 years. Turnover was low, and when a spot opened, referrals filled it.)

Man, sounds like i should try to get in legally

Seeking asylum is legal.

To dive into it a bit more: Pretend the US economy collapsed largely because of Canada’s repeated interference in US economy or the economy of neighboring countries that might have been functional trading partners. After taking resources from America over the course of decades, installing pro-Canada politicians in local and state governments, and possibly even aiding in the creation of these roving gangs, Canada withdraws humanitarian support. They say that America needs to support itself and its own people and that sure they might have done some things a very long time ago (It wasn’t) but now America needs to create a functional government of its own. One not filled by the corruption that they helped to create.

None of which helps with the roving gangs breaking into homes and killing people.

But, seeking asylum is, on paper, legal. In order to legally cross into Canada you need to fear for your safety or for the safety of your family and seek asylum. Well, there are roving gangs, abuse is rampant, and the police force is either functionally useless or in the pockets of these groups so, hey, you have that down!

But you need to move quickly because there are people who want to make this PERFECTLY LEGAL means of immigration illegal, in which case there are no other nearby countries that you could flee to. And the current Prime Minister keeps saying they’ll close the border entirely, threatens bringing in guns, and it becomes increasingly clear that the longer you wait, the more violent and unlikely it is that you’ll be able to find a home in Canada.

So you cross. Legally.

Canada takes you at gunpoint, strips your two year old of anything that you’ve given them, and deports you. Months pass, no word from your child. You hear reports, they could be dead, dying, adopted into a Canadian family, or sold to human (usually sex) traffickers. No one knows, because no one is keeping track of what happens to American kids. You try to reach out for help and you get told that you should have followed the law.

Which you did.

And they stole and possibly murdered your kid for anyway.

Hey kids, this is the definition of a genocide! Push whoever wins in 2020 to allow UN investigations into this.
